  7. The video segments on this CD-ROM look best when played back in thousands or millions of colors (greater than 8-bit), but will look and run fine in 256 colors.

  10. Preparing Your System

Included on the CD in a folder named "Place contents in System Folder" are QuickTime 2.0, QuickTime PowerPlug and replacement Sound Manager files. If you are running an older version of QuickTime, remove it from your Extensions folder and replace it with the entire contents of the "Place contents in System Folder" folder. If you are using a Power Macintosh, install the QuickTime PowerPlug for optimum performance. Remember to restart your machine to enable these extensions.

  14. Detailed instructions for preparing your system:
  15. To Install QuickTime 2.0:
  16. 1. Locate the System Folder on your hard disk. Open the System Folder by double clicking on its icon.
  17. 2. Locate the Extensions folder inside your System Folder. Open the Extensions folder by double clicking on its icon.
  18. 3. If there is a copy of the QuickTime extension in the Extensions folder, drag it to the Trash. Note: do not empty the trash until you restart your Macintosh.
  19. 4. If there is a copy of the Apple Multimedia Tuner extension in the Extensions folder, drag it to the Trash.
  20. 5. Close the Extensions folder. Close the System Folder.
  21. 6. Drag the QuickTime, QuickTime PowerPlug, Sound Manager and Sound icons to your hard disk╒s System Folder icon (not into the open folder).
  22. 7.    Click OK in the dialog box that appears.
  23. 8.    Restart your Macintosh.

  26. Five ways to improve multimedia performance

  28. 1. Disable file sharing in the ╥Sharing Setup╙ control panel. File sharing can take up as much as 20% of processor time and will affect multimedia performance.

  30. 2. Disable screen savers. They steal processor time and some conflict with multimedia applications.

  32. 3. Set your disk cache (in the ╥Memory╙ control panel) to its minimum ╤ 32k. CD-ROMs with lots of audio and video will work better with this setting.

  34. 4. In your ╥Views╙ control panel, turn ╥Calculate Folder Sizes╙ off. It causes unpredictable pauses in operation.

  36. 5. In your ╥Memory╙ control panel, turn ╥Virtual Memory╙ off. It causes unpredictable pauses in operation.

  39. Other Memory and Performance Issues

  41. If you get ╥Out of memory╙ messages or Type 1 errors, try copying the application to your hard disk, select the STRANGE DAYS file and choose "Get Info" from the File menu and change the preferred size of the application to be 6000 or greater  depending on the amount of free RAM you have.

We have had reports that some PowerPC machines running older versions of system software (pre-7.5) have memory management problems. Assuming you have enough memory, you shouldn╒t have any problems running either version of the program. If you are running System 7.5, be sure to install the latest System update which is available free from Apple or your dealer (version 7.5.x).
